Plott Hound

History

Originating from a generation of Hanoverian Hounds crossed with Bloodhound and Cur bloodlines, the Plott Hound was created. This breed was used for medium and large wild game from Raccoon's to Bears. This breed still carries a natural, strong instinct to hunt and is most popular in the Southern region of the United States.

Appearance

The Plott Hound is a medium to large size breed with males and females measuring 20-25 inches in height and weighing 45-75 pounds in weight. Their large head is rectangular and oblong in appearance, forming into a broad, large, rectangular shaped muzzle that is long. Their two ears are very large, pendant shaped and hang gently alongside of their face. Their two eyes are large, perfectly round and generally a light amber to dark hazel in color. Their general body build is tall, long, and lean. Their tail is medium in length and tapers down to a point; held down and outwards. Their single layer coat is held close to the skin, is short and available in brindle, black, brindle and black saddle, black and brindle trim and buckskin. White on their chest is also possible.

Temperament

The Plott Hound is an extremely loyal, loving and protective breed who does well even with growing families. This breed is fearless when it comes to hunting and will have no problem backing down wild animals even the size of the wild bear. This breed is best suited for active, hunting families who are able to meet the daily mental and physical exercise requirements. This breed is a very fast learner; early socialization and obedience classes are recommended. Requires a firm and confident owner who is able to remain leader of the pack at all times and use positive reinforcement training methods only. This breed is best suited for canine only homes due to their strong hunting instincts.

Grooming

This breed does shed. Daily brushing and bathing when needed.

Special Notes

This breed requires a properly fenced in yard or properly fitting harness and leash while outdoors at all times. Please fully educate yourself about the Plott Hound prior to adding one to your household to ensure you are able to provide life long physical and financial care to your new family member. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
